Haste makes Waste - Stored Procedure Recompilation

Haste makes Waste - Stored Procedure Recompilation

During the study of the release notes of the new IDS 10.00.FC8 version I noticed a long anticipated feature that already made it into IDS 10.00.FC7:

Enhanced Concurrency after Recompilation of SPL Routines

The problem of locked rows in the dictionary table sysprocplan is something that comes up in many IDS installations that work intensively with stored procedures. The recommendation to reoptimize the stored procedures manually after DDL changes - update statistics for procedure - helps to avoid the problem but is more a kind of a workaround and is often forgotten by the administrator or application developer.

Final Version: IBM Redbook about IDS Security

Final Version: IBM Redbook about IDS Security

A new interesting Redbook Redbook has left the draft status and has been officially published:

Security and Compliance Solutions for IBM IDS

Download the Redbook to gain an understandig on the robust and comprehensive security technology that IDS offers. IDS is IBM's safest and most performant data server for business critical data on the Linux, Unix and Windows platforms.

IDS 11: Extending Availability and Replication

IDS 11: Extending Availability and Replication

Good news for anyone who is looking for real high availability. IBM has published a new Redbook that extensively covers the superior replication capabilities of it's OLTP flagship data server IDS:

IDS V11 - Extending Availability and Replication

Good to see that more and more technical information about IDS is made available.

From the table of contents:

HDR Parameters and their Meaning

HDR Parameters and their Meaning

DRTIMEOUT

DRTIMEOUT specifies the upper limit of time that the Primary will wait for an acknowledgment from the Secondary until it assumes a data replication failure. Checkpoints on the Secondary must not exceed the DRTIMEOUT boundary. Primary and Secondary will also ping each other regardless if logical log records are send. DRTIMEOUT specifies the interval at which those pings are send. A HDR failure is assumed after four sequential ping attempts failed. So the DRTIMEOUT parameter should be set to 1/4 (25 %) of the total time that is appropriate before declaring a failure.

New: IDS Resource Agent for Linux-HA Clustering

New: IDS Resource Agent for Linux-HA Clustering

In order to extend the High-Availability (HA) portfolio of IDS, Lars Daniel Forseth, a student of Applied Computer Science at IBM Germany, implemented the IDS Resource Agent for the Open Source Cluster software Linux-HA (aka Heartbeat, http://www.linux-ha.org) in the scope of his diploma thesis.

This IDS Resource Agent enables an HA cluster running on Linux-HA to manage an IDS database server instance as a cluster resource.
